The other day, after a fox got our rooster as well as two chickens, and as I was toiling hopelessly (I thought) fortifying a fence against said fox (using rocks, boards, and other bits of heavy things, since foxes dig) I burst out,"Why do we even have chickens anyway! We get attached and this happens, and it's not like we're making money off it, with grain being so expensive." And my mum said, like the moral genius she is, "It's a good public service." (For fresh free-range eggs, etc.)
So, when I have kids, or, more probably, adopt, and wonder about getting chickens, I shall think of this experience and go for it! Apparently, all kids should experience chickens.
