Ode To A Mug

This is a poem about a cup that a dear friend of ours gave to me after we talked about Emma, Downton Abbey, and North and South.

"O Masterpiece Theatre cup
with your shining, oblique white porcelain interior
many a beverage have your spacious walls encircled
Steaming, fragrant tea
hot chocolate towering with whipped cream
they all last through a sonata
ten book pages
twelve knitted rounds on a sweater's arm
they do not go cold in my absence
you are like an old friend
we take care of each other
you and I
and you sit dutifully on the table
the chair arm
the porch floor
Just waiting
a small warmth
for a cold day."
